Parts of speech in English


Parts of speech

The words are divided according to their position and usages in a sentence. Such classification of words in the different groups are called 'The Parts Of Speech'.

Here is a simple example to understand, 

What is the meaning of the parts of speech?




In the above's example the different parts of a cycle is shown.That each part of the cycle has a specific name and also a special function. These specific names of the parts of a cycle are called the Parts Of Cycle.When we joint all these parts in correct place & in the correct order. Then only we can get a complete picture of the cycle.


In this way the words which we use to write or to speak a sentence are the different parts of the speech (sentences). These all parts have some specific names, position and uses. These specific names of the words are called the parts of speech.



There are 8 parts of speech in English language.


1.The Noun

2.The Pronoun 

3.The Adjective

4.The Verb 

5.The Adverb

6.The Preposition 

7.The Conjunction 

8.The Interjection


The Noun 


The name of a person, place, thing or idea is called a noun.


Examples

1.A table is very lightweight.

2.We play on ground.

3.The school is my favorite place.

4.A boy is walking.

(The words shown in bold are the noun)

Some more nouns:-

House, boy, girl,truth, tear, sorrow, poverty, honesty,braveness,brightness,sadness,happiness, smartness, cleverness etc.


The Pronoun 


A pronoun is a word which is used in the place of a noun.


Examples:-

1.Rohan is a student, he is very clever.

In the above sentence Rohan is a noun and in the second sentence the word 'he' is used in the place of Rohan. So here the word 'he' is the pronoun.

2.Sushma is a girl. She is studying in government school.

In the sentence, Sushma is a girl. Sushma is a noun and the word 'she' is used instead of the word Sushma. So the word she is the pronoun.

3.A cat is playing. It is jumping on a table.

In the above's first sentence 'a cat' is a noun and in the second sentence the word ' it ' is used instead of a cat. So this word is a pronoun.

4.The people collected the stones & they threw it.

In the above's first sentence 'The people' is a noun and in the second sentence the word 'They' is used instead of 'The people'. So this word is a pronoun.

Some more Pronouns

I,he,she,it,they,we,you,her,him,his,myself, herself, themselves, mine,me etc.


The Adjective 

An adjective is a word which gives more information about a noun.

 Examples:-

1.She is a good girl.

In the above's sentence 'girl' is a noun and the word good give an extra information about her so good is an adjective

2.My friend likes red rose.

In the above's sentence Rose is the noun. the word 'red' gives an extra information about the rose. So here the word 'red' is an adjective.


Some other adjectives:-

Some,few,rich,poor,bright,dull,red,white, straight, beautiful,ugly, innocent,rude etc.

The Verb 

The verb is a word that denotes an action in the sentence or States something. Such word is called a verb.


1.My grandmother told me story

2.My friends playing on the ground

3.Mr. srilesh works in a company

4.I have two friends.

In the above's sentences told, playing ,have, works are the verbs.

Sit,walk,ask,play,sing,cry,laugh,roar,write,read,catch,count,paint,put,gain,loose,have,has,shall,will,is,are,was,were etc.


The Adverb

An adverb is a word which gives more information about a verb or adjective or an another adverb is called an adverb.

Examples:-

1.Karan runs fast.(Describes a verb)

In the above sentence runs is a verb and the word fast gives an extra formation about the verb 'run'. So in the above's sentence the word fast is an adverb.


2.My father drinks very cold coffee.(Describes an Adjective)


In the above sentence cold is an adjective because it's use more information about coffee and the word very use more inform nation about cold so the word very describe the word cold so here the word very is and adverb


3.My friend runs very slowly.(Describes an adverb)

In the above's sentence 'runs' is a verb.A word slowly gives more information about the word 'runs'.So the word 'slowly' is an adverb.


The Preposition 


The word Pre+position denotes that the word which is used before the position (place) in a sentence to denote the position of a noun or pronoun.It is called a preposition.

Ex- The cat is on the table.

Here the word 'on' denotes the position of the cat and it is used before the position (the table). So the word 'on' is a preposition.

In other words, the preposition is a word which is used to state a relation of a noun or a pronoun with the other words in a sentence.

Examples:-

1.The ball is on the table.

2.The students are in the class.

3.The chart is above the head.

4.The trees are infront of our school.

Simple Prepositions :-

At,about,against,after,around,among,across,by,down,for,from,  off,of,on,out,over,in,under,since,through,up,into etc.

Compound Prepositions :-

Upon,within, without, beneath, beside,before,beyond ,below, between, behind,infront of, behind of etc.


The Conjunction

A conjunction is a word which is used to connect two or more words, phrases, clauses or sentences.

Examples:-

1.Tea or coffee.

2.Rama and Shyam.

3.The window is open so the water is coming inside.

4.He tried a lot but failed the exam.

Some more Conjunctions :-

And,as well as,both- and,but, only,or,else, otherwise, yet, however, so, hence,therefore etc

The Interjection

An interjection is a word which is used to express sudden feelings emotions.

Examples :-

1.Oh! What a beautiful rose it is!

2.Alas! he is no more.

3.Hurray! we have won the match.

4.Wow! We seen a falling star.

In the above sentences, oh! Alas! hurray! wow! etc. this words are used to express our sudden feelings and an exclamation mark is used after these words. Such words are called an interjection.
